ALVIN FERNANDEZ

Alvin Fernandez and his brand Ae’lkemi have successfully carved a niche by representing femininity through innovative organic textile processes and stylistic expressions such as the creative use of handprints and jewel embellishments. Alvin’s diverse approach to fashion is woven into his designs from conceptualisation. Alvin passionately incorporates contrasting and unexpected themes in his work.

As a brand renowned for the quality of its distinctive hand finishing, Ae’lkemi never compromises design integrity, even whilst seeking to bring the collections to a wider audience. The garments are recognized for their signature raw-edged elegance. Each collection stays true to the core motif of accentuating femininity whilst drawing inspiration from themes as elaborate as the 16th Century Spanish Armada, through to the French Riviera of the 1970s. Previous collections have graced the Fashion Week runways of his native Australia, as well as Milan and Berlin. During a noted New York City collaboration with Ford Modeling Agency, Alvin’s designs were a prominent feature of the ‘G’day USA’ festival.

The opening of Alvin’s flagship store in Perth provided a showcase for both his womenswear and menswear, whilst collaborating with Annemarie McGinn for accessories. Alvin Fernandez was among the prize winners of the 1997 Textile Institute Awards and in 1998 won the Western
Australia Student Designer of the Year and Evening Wear Award at the Western Australia Fashion Design Awards. He has since won awards for Fantasia Wearable Art and Resort/Swimwear was a finalist in the 2001 Mercedes Start Up Program and in 2005 won the coveted Western Australian Designer of the Year Award.
